Rome Attractions
The whole historic centre of Rome is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, so expect to do some serious sightseeing. The architecture is awesome and there is so much to fit in. Why not start at Rome’s most famous icon, the Coliseum? Construction started here under Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD, and finished eight years later. This incredible structure would have seated 55,000 people over four storeys.
Another amazing sight is St Peter’s Basilica, with its huge dome. The largest Christian church in the world, it was built by Emperor Constantine and finished in 349 AD. Successive Popes have given it upgrades since then, and you can see the history of Roman architecture down the ages in its various stages.
Sightseeing in Rome
After a short break in one of Rome's many street side cafes or bars, or a delicious meal with local wine in a traditional restaurant, there is plenty more to see in the city. Don’t miss the beautiful Trevi Fountain on your tour. Commissioned by Pope Clement XII in 1732, it features Neptune the god of the sea in a shell-shaped chariot.
The Spanish Square and Spanish Steps are also a popular tourist attraction, linking two churches with huge flights of stairs adorned with flowers. You can see this and so much more on your city break to Rome.
